why do people on motorbikes always nod at others on motorbikes when they pass?
I've noticed it everytime they pass, I'm just wondering why!

- they are saying......HI MATE,HOWS IT GOING THEN.......nice bike, why you going that way.the race is this way
- its called a bikers nod, its just something bikers have been doing for years, same as the old mini drivers that wave at each other.
- A mutual acknowledgement of being a motorcyclist - the biggest gang in the UK - respect!!!!!
- I think that their heads are lose.
- Its just a biker thing just saying hello thats all. Some people will not do it to Harleys some will not nod to someone on a scooter. I say hi to everyone on a bike.
- Mutual respect i guess like...........' hey, how cool are we' LOL
- Not sure why bikers acknowledge each other but my wife always waves to people who drive the same make car as hers (Ford KA).....I'm guessing it's a kind of appreciation.
- it is just the unofficial biker code a way of saying hi from one biker to another you will find that us bikers are a race on our own and will always acknowledge another biker just like we will almost always stop to help another biker in trouble
- It's a kind of club. Used to get it when I drove an Impreza, and get it now I drive a Multipla. Just acknowledgement that we are in on the same secret.
- its a sign of respect to other "riders"
- It only LOOKS like they're nodding. They're actually checking out the other person's bike - looking it up and down. :-)
- Its called a Band of Brothers, its the same thing as saying hi to one of your friends.
- Bus drivers nod to other bus drivers as well. Truckers probably do the same. Someone driving a particular type of car my do the same for someone else driving that type of car. It's just a way to say HI and in the case of someone driving a private vehicle, good choice. It doesn't cost a thing to be pleasant to others, and that's all that's happening.
- I guess that they appreciate that someone else has the same taste as theirs. I drive a Jeep Wrangler and other Jeeps waive at me and I always waive back.
- its to acknowledge them & say hi, just the same as flashin light or puting hand up
- Mutual respect , a sort of clan acknowledgement.
- Becouse if you try to wave you bloomin fall off.
- the answers are right...whether a wave or a nod, we are all fellow riders ..no matter what we ride...but there are many harley riders who WONT EVER wave at a fellow biker ulness he/she rides a harley.and its been that way for many years...what i find funny,is how they sometimes wave at me now that i ride a mean streak(which looks so much like a harley)non-riders always ask me what year harley it is!....its hilarious!
- because they recognise each other as middle aged businessmen folk who feel the need to recapture thier lost youth.
- Its simply a sign of respect.
- Just my way of saying "Dude I wish I had your ride instead of mine!"
- respect and politeness. it can get a bit neck breaking when everyone is out, or if you been on a bike for a while, then when youre in the car you forget and wave at a biker and they wonder who the hell you are!have to tape your hand to the steering wheel..'D'HO oh yeah im in the car!'
- Because the cop said "Next time you wave use all your fingers."
- it is a respect thing but not all bikers do it . it gets tyring if u are somwere there are hundreds of bikers
- We are passing signals to other bikers to unite and confirm our brotherhood against the cagers.
- We're a minority, constantly in danger of being smashed like bugs, and it's a way of letting other drivers know that we watch out for each other.
- If you have to ask, you wouldn,t understand.
- It's called "The Brotherhood"
- it's just wind
- because we all want to agree that car driivers are tossers
- Its just acknowledging fellow bikers. Its called the bikers nod, and has been done for donkeys years
- all bikers are a breed of their own we acknoledge each other, its like being part of a big family, u wouldnt drive past your sister and not wave! we are a freindly bunch of people who like to say hi howz it going as we are riding!
- 'cos they know they share a unique secret and they're members of an exclusive club.
- It is a form of respect
- Because bikers nod at them?!! Dont know why we do it but we do. Much safer than sticking our hands out like the French do, I nearly stacked it quite often when I went over there!
- Nodding seems to be a UK thing, in France they shake the left foot. Other signs include a lift of the left had a couple of inches off the bar, particularly when passing. Done as an acknowlegment and sign of friendship to fellow bikers. I ride a 900cc bike, but will acknowlge all other riders if it is safe to do so.
- Made the mistake of accidentally nodding to a Harley rider once ( thought it was a Dragstar), Didn't half get a filthy look. Got me revenge though about an hour later on me way back home when I passed same biker on the side of the road with a busted rubber band. Harley rider on the back of a Suzuki - Priceless.
