How do you put the mirrors on a Ducati 1098?

I just replaced the front fairing on my 08 Ducati 1098. I have had no problems wiht the right mirror going back on. i have spent 2 days putting the left mirror back on. Is there something that I am missing or is there a special tool or trick that I dont know about? My thumbs and fingers are sore from trying so much.

1. Just use duct tape
2. If you have spent two days trying it is probably worth giving up and getting a professional to do it. Just on the off chance, is it a reverse thread like old Yamahas used to have?
