About how many miles can you put on a sportsbike before worrying about it wearing out?
I'm thinking about buying a Honda, Kawasaki or Yamaha 600cc bike. I'm just trying to find out a few things about bikes before I invest in one. How many miles can you put on a bike of this sort before having to replace parts and worry about it breaking down?

- about 20,000 miles, this type of bike are usually run pretty hard.
- That depends on how it is ridden and maintained. On average most inline four sportbike motors can expect to get about 50,000 miles or so on them before anything needs to be rebuilt. If the bike is not abused, and is properly maintained, even higher mileage before an engine rebuild can definitely be achieved. If you don't service it regularly, constantly over-rev it, etc., you will be lucky to get about 20,000 miles out of it. Usually after the engine is worn out though, these bikes are just salvaged because the cost of repairs is greater than the bikes value.
- Out of the three makes you mention Honda is by far the most reliable and long lived. Obviously, you will have to change normal consumables like filters, plugs, brake linings, tires etc but if looked after properly and serviced regularly you will find a Honda will last many 10s of thousands of miles before needing major work. The service interval is usually about 4 thousand miles. Its worth looking after the metal bits particularly if you live in an area of high humidity - keep it garaged or under a breathable cover and dry it off if you go out in the wet. If you are thinking of riding it a lot it might be worth fitting a ScotOiler which keeps the chain lubed from an oil reserve. Crash bungs are also good as the plastic bits are expensive on any bike if you drop it. Again if your riding in bad weather get a double bubble screen for greater comfort. Hope this helps a little and good riding.
- As Disaff said it is not how many miles but it is how the bike is ridden. If you are rev happy and constantly redlining the bike and abuse it it will have a 1/3 of the life of a bike that is ridden "normal". Now you can ride your bike hard as long as you maintain it properly. Personally I am an aggressive rider but I change my oil every 500-1,000 and flush/change my radiator fluid at the same time. Stay on top of it and it will last many miles and many years.
- depends on the "CC's" and upkeep dillagence! bikes are for racing on streets!!

- get bike ins from progressive, ride it like you stole it if you kill it or crash it they have a new policy like their boat policy which will buy you a new nike. my bro had a yamaha r1 and rode it for 90,000 miles and did nothing except tires, oil changes and brake pads. we wont talk about all of the broken plastic from his crazy ass drunken wheelies. he finally crashed it good around 93,000 miles and progressive bought him a new bike. my bro is dead now.
- Modern bikes are amazingly reliable, properly maintained it can last 100,000 miles. Of course you have to maintian it, the normal wearable items. Tirers, chains, clutches, brakes. Plus changing your fluids. Keep your throttle bodies synced, and you might need to adjust your valves every couple seasons. Too.
